The American Geographical Society has a long-standing interest in advancing cartographic and geographic knowledge of Antarctica, predating the International Geophysical Year (1957-1958) by several decades. This article reviews the Society's major contributions to Antarctic cartography, including early mapping efforts based on aerial photography, the compilation and continuous revision of Antarctic base maps at scales of 1:6,000,000 and 1:5,000,000, and the planning and publication of the Antarctic Map Folio Series.
