1967Hitchcock reports that planning for the atmospheric-climatology folio included circulating a tentative table of contents on meteorology to scientists who reviewed National Science Foundation proposals. At the time of writing, cartographic work on synoptic atmospheric conditions was partly complete, while climatology of the surface environment, troposphere, and lower stratosphere remained among the subjects scheduled for the series.

The American Geographical Society has a long-standing interest in advancing cartographic and geographic knowledge of Antarctica, predating the International Geophysical Year (1957-1958) by several decades. This article reviews the Society's major contributions to Antarctic cartography, including early mapping efforts based on aerial photography, the compilation and continuous revision of Antarctic base maps at scales of 1:6,000,000 and 1:5,000,000, and the planning and publication of the Antarctic Map Folio Series. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the Folio Series adopts an interdisciplinary approach, covering 17 subjects, and aims to synthesize existing knowledge while identifying gaps for future research. Through international cooperation and ongoing revisions, these cartographic products serve as essential references for scientific research, logistical planning, and educational activities in Antarctica.
