Antarctic Map Folio Series · Version 1

1964–1975

Vivian C. Bushnell reports the completion of the American Geographical Society's Antarctic Map Folio Series. After Folio 18, Antarctic Mammals, appeared in December 1974, work concentrated on the final volume, Folio 19, History of Antarctic Exploration and Scientific Investigation, published in October 1975. Its fifteen plates cover early concepts of Antarctica dating to A.D. 43; expedition routes, flights and inland traverses from 1772 to 1954, with brief expedition highlights; and accomplishments from 1954 to 1975, including traverses and annual science-station locations. Henry M. Dater's discussion of exploration motives opens the folio; Society staff prepared the remainder, which includes a bibliography of 280 sources used. The notice also gives purchasing information and a completion discount for purchases of five or more folios, noting that the out-of-print Folio 2 is available on color microfilm.
