Book reviews: Antarctic map folio series. Folio 13: Circumpolar characteristics of Antarctic waters

Niels Nielsen reviews Antarctic Map Folio Series, Folio 13 (1970), comprising Circumpolar Characteristics of Antarctic Waters by A. L. Gordon and R. D. Goldberg and Sound Channels in Antarctic Waters by K. Hunkins. His discussion concerns the hydrographic maps, which cover Antarctic waters northward to 40°S and show temperature, salinity and oxygen content at depths of 20, 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 metres, including mean values, together with seven vertical profiles extending from the coast to 40°S. The material derives from approximately 5,800 hydrographic stations surveyed by American and other nations' expeditions. Nielsen recommends using Folio 13 alongside Folio 6, Structure of Antarctic Waters Between 20°W and 170°W, and values the compiled overview because Antarctic and subantarctic waters contain several key problems for global oceanographic research.
