The authors describe how the National Atlas of Spain (ANE) handles cross-cutting subjects within its 24 topics and nine parts, a structure developed jointly by the ANEXXI scientific network and the National Geographic Institute’s multidisciplinary team. Ongoing revision adds subjects and updates approaches while retaining previously represented variables. Topic-specific university teams work with IGN cartographers, who coordinate overlapping content; maps of same-sex marriages in Demography and same-sex couples in Society illustrate different treatments of a related subject. Graphic-resource tags help connect material across topics. The linked España en mapas. Una síntesis geográfica, called Spain on maps. A geographical synthesis in the article, provides the baseline for the gender discussion: its last version contained a “Women” section in Society and a small Gender Violence section in Defence, Security and Justice. Current updates address gender wherever relevant official data exist, record it in DefineANE, and draw on earlier editions to develop time series. The authors report that Spain’s Ministry of Equality included ANE as a key tool in its 2022–2025 equality plan. They envisage compiling the gender-sensitive resources into a future monographic atlas to support decisions on inclusion and social sustainability.
