The Times Atlas of the World · Version 1

1895–2023

G. R. Crone reviews the 1957 fifth volume, The Americas, of The Times Atlas of the World: Mid-Century Edition, edited by John Bartholomew. He praises its unusually large scales, layer colouring for relief and high cartographic standard. Sixteen of its twenty-four plates cover North America; most United States sheets use 1:2.5 million, while South America occupies five sheets at 1:5 million. Recent northern Canadian surveys are incorporated, and United States highway classes are clearly distinguished, though names crowd some densely populated areas and Mexico. Brazil extends across all five South American sheets, leaving its general map at a very small scale. Mostly uniform-scale city insets facilitate comparison, and Crone values the approximately 45,000-entry index as a gazetteer. He finds the concluding Pacific bathymetric map effective in showing seabed contrasts, but notes difficulty identifying some island groups.
