Summary

This article reviews the first volume (published in 1961) of the Atlas of the Republic of Austria, edited by the Commission for Spatial Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The atlas is planned to comprise 6 installments with a total of 120 map plates, covering 12 thematic groups including topography, climate, soils, population, economy, transport, and culture. The first installment contains 20 maps, primarily on climate, agriculture, transport, tourism, and administration, mostly at scales of 1:1,000,000 or 1:2,000,000. The author highly praises the atlas for its well-conceived geographical-scientific concept and refined cartographic design, noting its advantage gained from the preceding series of Austrian federal-state atlases. Special appreciation is given to innovative plates such as the building-type maps of Vienna. The review also anticipates the atlas's significance as a model for the planned Swiss national atlas.
