Papua New Guinea · Version 1

1970–1985

The review describes Ward and Lea’s 1970 An Atlas of Papua and New Guinea as a thematic atlas with 51 thematic maps and limited topographic coverage, unsuitable for route-finding. Its subjects range from geology, soils and rainfall to pidgin English, religions, tuberculosis and archaeological sites. The reviewer praises Malous Ploeg’s clear black-and-white maps and the contributors’ concise accompanying commentaries. Originally produced for the 42nd ANZAAS Congress in Port Moresby, the atlas used simple printing and softcover binding to keep its price at $2.50. The reviewer values its practical design and joins H. C. Brookfield in hoping for a larger thematic atlas, complemented by modern 1:100,000 and 1:250,000 topographic maps.
