Norman J. W. Thrower reviews A Descriptive Atlas of New Zealand, edited by A. H. McLintock and cited as published in 1959. Prepared under an advisory committee representing government departments and the New Zealand Geographical Society, the atlas comprises text, photographs, maps, and a gazetteer. Its 28 text sections, written mainly by government specialists with university contributions, occupy nearly half the volume and cover New Zealand’s development, natural features, and resources. It includes 25 analyzed full-page oblique aerial photographs, color thematic maps, a seven-part physical map at 1:1 million, and larger-scale urban maps. Thrower praises the breadth of information, the selection of photographs, and the design and printing of the government-produced maps, calling the volume a notable addition to national atlases.
