The reviewer notes that the first volume, Taiwan province, gives detailed place names in Chinese characters and romanization, with additional maps of geology, climate, soils, forest types, land use and transport. The review welcomes the atlas as a remedy for the inconvenience of lacking detailed maps after changes in Taiwan place names and readings, and it approves the inclusion of some old names alongside the current ones—for example Yushan/Xin Gaoshan, Xueshan/Ci Gaoshan, Zhongshan/Alishan and Ren'ai/Wushe—for comparison.

The notice reviews the Taiwan volume of the Atlas of the Republic of China, edited by Chang Chi-yun and published by the Institute for National Defense Research (first edition 1959; second edition 1963; 43 maps). It describes detailed place names in Chinese characters and romanization, maps of geology, climate, soils, forest types, land use and transport, and selected former place names for comparison. The reviewer welcomes its relief of the inconvenience caused by changed place names and pronunciations and the lack of detailed maps.
