Summary
The article compares six maps of mean annual isohyets for the V Baoulé, a forest–savanna transition zone in central Côte d’Ivoire. All draw on ASECNA meteorological records, but differ markedly in contour shape, observation periods, scale, data processing, and authors’ assumptions. Maps focused on regional vegetation tend to emphasize parallels between isohyets and the forest–savanna boundary, whereas a map using longer, statistically homogenized records shows a weaker correspondence. Blanc-Pamard notes that none explicitly documents its contouring principles. Short observation periods and larger-scale mapping without additional stations can support unreliable detailed interpretations; she also criticizes some authors for aligning contours with their working hypotheses. Although rainfall is lower in the region, she considers its dryness frequently overstated and annual rainfall totals insufficient to explain vegetation patterns. The article advocates considering rainfall seasonality, potential evapotranspiration, and water deficits, and urges caution in interpreting isohyet maps within this gradual forest–savanna transition.
