1950–1963This report introduces Volume I, “Navigational Geography,” of the Soviet Marine Atlas, published in 1950, and reproduces its preface, contents, and legend. The compilation outline was established in 1941; work was curtailed during the war, resumed afterward, and received approval in 1947. The volume contains 83 map sheets, arranged in geographical sequence from overview maps to regional charts and port plans, for reference in marine research and voyage planning. The report describes its coverage, projections, scales, relief representation, symbol system, and separately bound place-name index, emphasizing the detailed depiction of both terrestrial and submarine relief. Most maps use the Mercator projection, while polar maps employ polar projections. Contours, depth contours, and layered colouring represent relief, alongside symbols for navigational hazards, navigational aids, currents, sea ice, geomagnetic features, and seasonal shipping routes. The accompanying preface further explains source materials, coordination between overlapping sheets, depth datums, and principles of place-name transliteration. Depths retain the datums of the source charts without conversion to a common sea level. Most political boundaries reflect January 1950, while some earlier-printed sheets reflect January 1948. The author strongly praises the atlas’s cartographic standards and synthesis of marine research, and advocates learning from its compilation techniques in connection with national development.
