G. R. Cron reviews Nuevo Atlas de España (Aguilar, Madrid, 1961), a 455-page atlas based on five hypsometrically coloured plates of the peninsula at 1:1,500,000 and provincial maps at 1:600,000. The provincial maps show judicial divisions and all places with more than 500 inhabitants, accompanied by smaller maps of population density, agriculture and animal husbandry, minerals and industries, history and archaeology, and climate diagrams. Cron praises the clear physical maps and well-organized information, while noting that some thematic symbols are difficult to distinguish and some names are very small. General maps covering geology through human and historical geography, numerous statistical tables, an index of about 35,000 entries, and several hundred photogravure illustrations of Spanish landscape, life and art complete the atlas. Cron predicts that it will become a standard reference on Spanish geography and culture.
