Cartografia Estera: Atlas över Sverige

This article reviews the Swedish national atlas "Atlas över Sverige", published in 1953 by the Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography in Stockholm. The atlas aims to depict the physical, human, and economic aspects of Sweden through cartographic representation, filling a gap left since similar works appeared in Finland and Norway. Initiated by Sweden's oldest geographical society after World War II, the project was guided by an editorial committee of eminent scholars and planned for completion in installments over four to five years. Covering 14 thematic sections—from geophysics and meteorology to population, agriculture, industry, and cultural conditions—the atlas emphasizes up-to-date and reliable data while maintaining a balanced structure. The review highlights the map of rural housing density and distribution (plates 61–62) as an example of the work's depth in statistical processing and its clear, original cartographic solutions.
