Book Reviews: National atlas of Sweden. Agriculture and forestry in Sweden since 1900: a cartographic description

This review evaluates two books on the history of Swedish agriculture and forestry in the twentieth century, produced under the National Atlas of Sweden project: a richly illustrated atlas and an anthology of articles. It highlights both continuity and change over the past century. Continuity is evident in long-term cultivation of plains, forest-dominated landscapes, and reindeer husbandry, while two major transformations are identified: post-World War II technological advances that reduced farm units and mechanized forestry, and a later shift since the 1980s toward environmental sustainability and recreational land use, reflected in declining chemical inputs, expanding nature reserves, and organic farming. The review underscores the need to interpret these developments within cultural, political, and ecological contexts, and notes minor discrepancies in data between the two volumes.
