Summary

This review discusses the second installment of the Atlas of the Republic of Austria, published in 1963. Edited by the Commission for Spatial Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, this national atlas is planned to comprise 12 thematic groups across 115–120 map plates. The new installment includes geological, climatic, and hydrological maps, as well as maps of Roman-era topography and dialect distribution, alongside agricultural, industrial, transport, administrative, and cultural maps. The atlas prioritizes synthetic geographical representations, emphasizing functional and socio-geographical perspectives. All main maps use a 1:1,000,000 scale, supplemented by smaller thematic maps and diagrams. Despite production constraints, the overall quality is commendable, and the addition of explanatory texts is suggested for enhanced usability.
