Atlas över Sverige

This is an academic review of the Atlas över Sverige (National Atlas of Sweden), published in 1971 by the General Staff Lithographic Institute's publishing house in Stockholm, under the editorship of the Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography, with cartography by the Cartographic Institute. The review notes that with the release of the 26th delivery, comprising four double sheets, this comprehensive cartographic work—a collaborative achievement of Swedish geography, cartography, and related disciplines—was completed. The atlas contains 151 single-sided map sheets organized into eleven thematic sections, totaling 260 maps, with a primary scale of 1:2 million, supplemented by numerous maps at 1:4 million, 1:8 million, and 1:12 million scales. The review highlights the four double sheets of the final delivery: geology (featuring four maps on gravitation, stratigraphy and tectonics, morphology, and planation surfaces), population (including population distribution, changes in arable land 1951–1967, and a 1980 forecast), valuable natural monuments (with a comprehensive register and aerial photographs), and prehistoric archaeology (recording approximately 1,000 sites with 14 distinct symbols). The review concludes that the atlas, combining maps with explanatory texts, offers rich information and a comprehensive overview of Sweden.
