West Germany · Version 1
1965–1985Marie-Thérèse Gambin reviews a new installment of Die Bundesrepublik Deutschland in Karten, comprising eight plates on the 1961 population census and fourteen maps of public services, transport and tourism using statistics from 1965 and 1967. She singles out several plates as valuable beyond their documentary content, including comparisons of population density in Central Europe, age pyramids, income types, planning maps, and a map showing the hierarchy of cities and their areas of influence through central-place theory. She characterizes the atlas, numbering about a hundred plates, as predominantly analytical: it records conditions or facilities at particular dates, leaving readers to compare the maps, explain spatial differences and develop regional syntheses.

This article reviews the latest developments in German-language thematic atlases from the late 1960s to early 1970s. It notes that the production of thematic maps has now rivaled that of topographic maps, and focuses on analyzing the Tyrol Atlas, the Atlas of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Atlas of the Danube Countries, the Topographic Atlas of Hesse, and the Meyer thematic atlas series. The author argues that these atlases differ methodologically: some emphasize analytical description, others stress synthetic presentation, and still others innovate by pairing aerial photographs with maps. The article particularly praises the oceanography atlas in the Meyer series for its novelty, and points out the need to balance detail against overview, and analysis against synthesis, in atlas production.
