The review describes Romania’s national geographic atlas, planned under the International Geographical Union’s national-atlas recommendations and printing standards. Its projected 76 plates in 13 chapters cover physical geography, administration, history, ethnography, population and economic activities, ending with a synthesis of the economy and tourism development. Physical geography accounts for 41% of the planned plates and economic and social subjects for 59%. Each 61 × 86 cm folding plate carries explanatory notes in Romanian, French, English and Russian, often with inset maps and diagrams. Publication is planned in annual fascicles; the first received contains eight plates printed in 1972 or 1973. The reviewer singles out the treatment of current karst landform processes as particularly original. While expecting conventional graphic presentation without innovation, the reviewer praises the atlas as a substantial compilation of knowledge and research on Romania.
