1963Niels Nielsen reviews the 1963 Atlas of Britain and Northern Ireland, planned and directed by D. P. Bickmore and M. A. Shaw and produced by the Clarendon Press’s Cartographic Department. Preparation began in 1951 through consultations with specialists in Oxford and Cambridge. The atlas maps nearly two hundred themes, chiefly at 1:2,000,000, with selected subjects at 1:1,000,000, and includes a place-name index and an appendix identifying contributors and sources. Nielsen praises its careful production and dense use of colours, symbols and numerical data, while noting that some maps strain the limits of representation. He highlights station-level climate observations and deviation diagrams, freshwater coverage, and especially the detailed treatment of population, employment and industry. Transport maps cover domestic and international movements, including shipping locations, vessel sizes and cargo types on a specified date. He regards the atlas as demanding and expensive, but considers its detailed documentation valuable for studying Britain’s demographic and economic structure, with potential uses in education and public and private administration.
