This paper reviews the historical background and ongoing progress of the new Swedish national atlas. The first Swedish national atlas, Atlas över Sverige, was published between 1953 and 1971, containing around 600 thematic maps. In 1987, the Swedish parliament allocated 40 million SEK to launch the new atlas project. The new edition employs state-of-the-art computer-based cartography and is planned to be published as a series of thematic volumes, with at least 17 volumes scheduled, each averaging 112–192 pages with a map-to-text ratio of approximately 70:30, available in both Swedish and English. The project is jointly managed by the National Land Survey, Statistics Sweden, and the Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography, with the editorial office located at the Department of Human Geography, Stockholm University. Manuscript production is highly decentralized across various institutions nationwide. The first volume is scheduled for publication in April 1990.
