Summary

This article reviews the compilation process, methodology, and contributions of the "Atlas of the Republic of Austria" to the study of Austria's spatial structures. Initiated by the Commission for Spatial Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the atlas aimed to scientifically map the country's fundamental spatial structures of practical relevance, providing a framework for spatial research and planning. The article details the project's organization, data sources and limitations, cartographic principles (emphasizing progressive integration from analytical to synthetic representations), and efforts to capture dynamic changes in population, economy, and settlements. Despite some data dating from the 1960s, most maps retain their validity. The article concludes with an overview of the atlas's sections and notes that further monographic studies will build upon it.
