Summary

This article reports on the publication of the Atlas of the Republic of Austria (Atlas der Republik Österreich), edited by the Commission for Spatial Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences under the direction of Prof. Hans Bobek. The atlas is planned to appear in fascicles, comprising a total of 115–120 maps, of which 85 main maps are at a scale of 1:1,000,000. The first fascicle, printed in 1961 by the cartographic institute Freytag & Berndt-Artaria in Vienna, includes a hypsometric map, four climatic maps (annual precipitation, snow cover duration, sunshine duration, and phenological map), two maps on settlement history, city maps of Vienna at scales of 1:25,000 and 1:50,000, a map of ecclesiastical administration, administrative division maps, and a map of the 1959 National Council elections. The atlas aims to comprehensively document the historical development, settlement, population, and economic conditions of Austria, serving as a representative national atlas.
