Lithuanian National Atlases

Summary

This article reviews the development of Lithuanian national atlases, focusing on the work of the Cartography Laboratory at Vilnius University from the post-WWII period through the Soviet era. It describes the compilation process, content structure (covering natural conditions and socio-economic analysis), and restricted distribution of the 1981 Atlas of Lithuania, as well as a public version prepared for general readership. Finally, it outlines future directions for the Centre of Cartography, including GIS-based thematic mapping and digital data services.
