Cartographical Progress: Atlas der Republik Österreich

Summary

Austria has a long and distinguished history in geodesy and cartography, ranking among Europe's leading nations in this field. Despite its deep traditions in official topographic mapping and thematic cartography, it is only now that Austria has produced a national atlas. The Atlas der Republik Österreich, edited by the Commission for Spatial Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences under the general direction of Professor Hans Bobek, with its first two fascicules published in 1961–1963 by Freytag-Berndt und Artaria in Vienna, marks a significant milestone. Employing a scale of 1:1,000,000 for general maps, the atlas covers a comprehensive range of physical, economic, historical, and social topics. The maps are clearly designed and well printed, with sources and limitations stated on each sheet. This publication represents an important contribution to Austrian geography and a notable achievement in national cartography.
