Summary

This review discusses the first part of the fourth installment of the Atlas of the Republic of Austria (1967–68), containing eleven map sheets on settlement, population, agriculture, and spatial planning. Two maps classify historical forms of urban and market settlements based on medieval core typologies, supplemented by insets on the timing of town charter grants and notable historical buildings. Demographic maps compare birth, death, and marriage rates from 1880 to 1961, alongside age structure data. Agricultural maps present hectare yields for various crops between 1955 and 1965 through both relative and absolute representations. A particularly innovative contribution is the map on the provision of central services, which uses concentric circles and sectoral divisions to visualize the concentration of services in central places and their regional supply levels. The reviewer concludes that the atlas, with its high scientific value and excellent technical execution, holds a distinguished position among national atlases.
