Summary

This review discusses the first installment of the Atlas of the Republic of Austria, published in 1961 under the general editorship of Hans Bobek and the Commission for Spatial Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. As a national atlas, it covers natural conditions, historical development, settlement forms, population, economic structure, administrative divisions, and cultural-political aspects. The atlas is planned to include 115–120 map sheets, with annual deliveries of 20 sheets; main maps are at a scale of 1:1,000,000. The first installment includes topographic and climate maps, prehistoric settlement maps, and detailed urban-geographic maps of Vienna at scales of 1:50,000 and 1:25,000, which methodologically combine building period, height, density, and land use. The review praises the outstanding cartographic and printing quality, notes that planning conclusions are only cautiously indicated, and expresses keen interest in future installments.
