Summary

This review discusses two atlases: the first installment of the Atlas of the Republic of Austria (Vienna, 1961), produced by the Austrian Academy of Sciences under Hans Bobek, and the New Atlas of Spain (Aguilar, Madrid, 1961). The Austrian atlas plans 85 main maps at 1:1,000,000 scale plus 140 smaller maps, covering physical, cultural, and population geography. The first installment excels in technical execution, featuring detailed maps of Vienna's settlement types, land use, grain and root crop distribution, 1957-58 bus traffic, and Catholic church organization; the traffic map reveals a clear east-west division in Austria's transport patterns. The Spanish atlas, created through collaboration among scholars and institutions, begins with a geographic-statistical overview offering extensive tabular data. Both works represent high-quality achievements in cartography.
