Albinas Pilipaitis; Giedrė Beconytė · 2002
Pilipaitis and Beconytė describe the Lithuanian National Atlas as planned in 2002. They advocate an integrated information system linking data, processes and participants throughout compilation and subsequent updating. The editorial principles combine natural and social themes, geography and history, regional context and cartographic communication quality. Proposed innovations include modular thematic sheets with self-contained texts, a 47 × 55 cm unfolded format accommodating Lithuania at 1:1,000,000, a separate section placing Lithuania in its global and European political-economic and natural settings, expanded landscape coverage, and regionalization and regional-development mapping. The historical section would cover periods before the nineteenth century and the nineteenth–twentieth centuries, each organized into political, social-cultural and economic history. The planned four parts comprised Lithuania in the world and Europe (10 sheets), nature and landscape (38), society and economy (36), and history (up to 40). These are project proposals, not a description of the final published volumes.
