This article critically evaluates the cartographic design and representation methods of the Atlas Vietnam, published in Hanoi in 1964. Conceived largely as a national atlas, the work comprises administrative, physical, climatic, demographic, ethnic, industrial, agricultural, and transport maps, together with regional and global overviews. Most national maps use a consistent scale of 1:4,000,000, creating a coherent and aesthetically balanced format. The analysis proceeds map by map, examining thematic content, symbol systems, color selection, legends, scale, generalization, quantitative comparability, and the treatment of neighboring territories. The atlas is praised for several effective solutions: the friendship map clearly conveys links between northern and southern provinces; the world map identifies states maintaining diplomatic or consular relations with Vietnam; the ethnic map employs guiding colors and numbered areas to distinguish language families; and the industrial and agricultural maps use memorable pictorial symbols and permit useful comparative reading. The population map’s detailed labeling and the general map’s combination of hypsometric coloring with gray relief shading are also regarded positively. Nevertheless, recurring methodological weaknesses reduce clarity and scientific precision. These include inconsistent boundary and settlement symbols, reversals of visual hierarchy in which subordinate places appear more prominent than capitals, incomplete or inconveniently arranged legends, missing graticules and scales, unsuitable color contrasts, excessive line weights, and inadequately differentiated elevation classes. Some maps omit essential information: the hemispheric transport map excludes air and maritime routes, while the transport map covers only land routes despite its broader title. Quantitative representation is often problematic, especially in population symbols, pictorial industrial signs, mixed ethnic areas, and classifications of navigable waterways. The physical and vegetation maps further reveal unequal source quality and differing degrees of generalization between North and South Vietnam and between Vietnam and neighboring countries. Terminological inconsistencies also affect the industrial and agricultural legends, and several important crops are represented in an illogical or redundant manner. Overall, the atlas is recognized as a significant and commendable national cartographic undertaking whose thematic breadth, coherent scale policy, and numerous innovative devices outweigh its deficiencies. The critique underscores the need for consistent semiotic conventions, quantitatively comparable symbols, complete legends, appropriate color hierarchies, and transparent acknowledgment of uneven source data. A more durable binding is finally recommended to match the atlas’s scholarly and practical importance.
