Cartographic representation of data in the National Atlas of India

This paper discusses the cartographic techniques employed in the compilation of socio-economic maps at 1:6,000,000 for the National Atlas of India. The primary objective is to evaluate symbolization strategies that effectively communicate diverse socio-economic data. The study describes a series of design innovations: while the traditional dot method was retained for agricultural distributions due to its proven effectiveness, proportional circles on thematic maps were largely replaced by proportional squares (e.g., urban population). For maps requiring two interrelated variables, a combination of circles and squares proved effective, as demonstrated on livestock market and fair maps. To represent manufacturing production concentrated in specific belts, proportional sectors of circles with distinct colours were used to depict multiple industrial commodities at a single location. Where production data were expressed in multiple measurement units, proportional squares and circles were concurrently combined with sectors; when no more than two products per location, coloured semicircles were found more effective. For occurrence-based themes, pictorial symbols resembling the actual features replaced conventional geometric markers, and symbols were conveniently aligned near sites when multiple features co-occurred. A critical analysis of the overall representational effect of these techniques is attempted, highlighting that these tailored symbol choices significantly enhance the clarity and analytical value of complex socio-economic maps.
