This article reviews the National Atlas of India (preliminary edition, 1957), compiled under the direction of S. P. Chatterjee, aiming to present a comprehensive picture of India's natural, economic, and social characteristics to the public. The atlas uses large-format sheets at a uniform scale and comprises 26 plates covering administration, relief, climate, geology, minerals, soils, vegetation, irrigation, agriculture, industry, transport, population, tribes, education, health, and archaeology.
