Map Topic Tags

The International Geographical Union’s Commission on National Atlases sought to standardise the subjects and content of national atlas maps so that maps from different countries could be compared. This work later extended to other complex regional atlases, finding expression in a series of volumes edited by K. A. Salichtchev.

Drawing on a review and analysis of published national atlases, National Atlases: Their History, Analysis, and Ways to Improvement and Standardization devotes a chapter to map subjects and content and concludes with a recommended list of basic and supplementary maps, providing a systematic framework for organising themes relating to nature, population, the economy, and culture. Russian and French editions appeared in 1960, followed by Chinese and English translations in 1962 and 1972 respectively. Complex Regional Atlases, published in Russian in 1976, examines the phenomena to be mapped, map content, and their interrelationships by theme, emphasising that the choice of subjects should reflect regional characteristics and users’ needs rather than follow a fixed list. Together, these works provide a basic framework and a reference for the content of the Museum’s topic classification.

Atlas subjects continue to expand as scientific research, cartographic techniques, and social needs change, with growing attention to environmental change, sustainable development, and social well-being. The Museum’s topic classification therefore extends beyond the scope of these two works, drawing on subsequent developments in atlas-making and the collection itself, and will continue to evolve.
