Summary
The text chiefly reviews the 1962 Atlas of the Ukrainian SSR and Moldavian SSR, preceded by the closing fragment of a review of another regional atlas. Stanisław Leszczycki finds that the atlas follows established Soviet regional-atlas conventions, lacks individually developed maps, and has no place-name index. Its extensive physical-geographical section contains several newly compiled or revised maps but offers limited cartographic innovation. The socioeconomic section introduces more methodological novelties, although transport mapping is heavily generalized and industrial maps are schematic, with symbol sizes left unexplained. The 39 agricultural maps provide a good account of land use, crops, and livestock distribution, but coverage of agricultural technical equipment is insufficient. The review also describes maps of education, culture, social welfare, and regional economies, and recommends moving statistical charts to separate pages to reduce visual crowding. Despite these criticisms, Leszczycki considers the atlas a valuable contribution to geographical knowledge of this part of the USSR.
