Summary

Erlenbach, 27 April (sda). Professor Eduard Imhof died in Erlenbach at the age of 91. He was regarded as the last great cartographic pioneer of the present day and as the representative of Swiss cartography par excellence. He produced countless reliefs and map works, including the Atlas of Switzerland, the secondary-school atlas, and school wall maps of many cantons. Born on 25 January 1895 in Schiers, a citizen of Fahrni near Steffisburg, Imhof became associate professor at ETH Zurich in 1925, where he founded the cartographic institute. In 1949 he was appointed full professor of topography and cartography, and he retired from that post in 1965.
