Summary

The Fig and Strawberry Trees Distribution Chart is based on elements collected from the “Preparation Chart” for the Agricultural and Forestry Chart, in the scale 1:250 000, worked out by the Agrarian Survey and Land Use Planning Service (SROA). The criteria followed for this chart are defined, the various occurrences of the two species being represented, namely the pure groves, the mixed (dominant or dominated), and the scattered ones. The Ficus carica and the Arbutus unedo are morphologically characterized, references being made to the polymorphism shown by the former”s cultivars. As one deals with a cultivated species - the Fig tree - introduced in Portugal long time ago and frequently naturalized, its chorological distribution in the country is shown together with some information on ecological and orographic features; the latter a native one equally dealt with but taking into consideration its phytosociolo- gical framing; it occurs in the cork-oak woodlands (Sanguisorbo-Quercetum suberis) and the strawberry-tree dominated scrub (Arbuto-Cistetum populifolii) from the South to the roble-oak-woodlands (Rusceto-Quercetum roboris) of the North, through out the oak-woodlands (Arisaro-Quercetum broteroi and Arbuto- Quercetum pyrenaicae) and strawberry dominated scrub (Phillyreo-Arbutetum une- donis) of the Centre.
