On the Publication of the Atlas of Czechoslovak History

Summary

This article reviews the monumental Atlas of Czechoslovak History, a collaborative work by about 180 authors comprising nearly 250 maps spanning from the Early Paleolithic to 1960. Its principal innovation lies in the comprehensive coverage and Marxist interpretation of history, moving beyond the traditional focus on political and military affairs to integrate economic, social, cultural, and demographic themes. Through varied scales and dynamic cartographic techniques, the atlas effectively reveals the spatial differentiation of historical processes, offering rich material for historical-geographical research. Despite minor flaws such as occasional anachronistic place names, the atlas's collective experience and editorial methods provide valuable reference for the Soviet project of the Atlas of World History.
