Summary

This article reviews the national atlas of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, published in 1963. It first notes the atlas's long preparation and outlines its structure, then provides a detailed thematic analysis of its contents, covering physical geography, population, economy, and transport. The author acknowledges the atlas's cartographic skill, color design, and innovative techniques, but points out significant shortcomings: an imbalance in content with excessive focus on analytical topics like industry and geology, and a lack of synthesizing maps, such as those for natural or economic regionalization, with culture almost entirely omitted. The article concludes that these deficiencies reflect a disconnect between analytical and synthetic approaches in British geography and anticipates that the upcoming London Congress will address these issues.
