Summary
Riccardo Riccardi reviews the sixtieth-anniversary edition of the Touring Club Italiano’s Atlante Internazionale, examining the first two instalments, published in autumn 1954 and spring 1955, and describing forthcoming material on the basis of a report by M. Castiglioni, director of the club’s cartographic department. The edition comprises 93 map plates over 173 pages, including 11 newly compiled and 11 completely redrawn plates, with 17 additional detail maps. Its revision seeks to update geographical base information and represent political conditions established after 1945. The review discusses changes in scales and projections, revisions to relief and hydrography, and updated representations of cities, transport, resource development, and scientific stations. Other changes include revised transliteration conventions, projection labels, loose-leaf binding allowing replacement of individual plates, and a separate index containing 230,000 place names. Riccardi strongly praises the scientific accuracy and cartographic quality of the published plates, while recommending distinct symbols for scientific stations and a population-appropriate symbol for Caracas.
