Summary

Maps of transport and tourism in 63 national atlases were analyzed in preparation for the "Atlas of the GDR," which is currently being compiled. The atlases are divided into six groups, which are described and evaluated. As a result of the analysis, the degree of complexity is determined as an index and criterion for the comparative evaluation of the traffic maps in the individual national atlases. This index is based on the application of thirteen possible methods for the cartographic representation of the accessibility of a region. The ranking of the atlases in relation to their degree of complexity is discussed, illustrated in a map, and discussed in the text. Finally, suggestions are made for further possibilities of a comparative evaluation of national atlases with regard to their maps of traffic and tourism.
