Summary

This article reviews the National Atlas of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, published in 1966. As the first national atlas among socialist countries, it was compiled in accordance with the recommendations of the Commission on National Atlases of the International Geographical Union. The atlas comprises 58 loose-leaf sheets containing 433 maps and diagrams organized into seven major thematic sections covering natural conditions, population, industry, agriculture, transport, and cultural services. Its notable features include high detail achieved through large base scales (1:1,000,000), the use of cartometric and experimental methods, the inclusion of maps showing the degree of scientific study, and a focus on reflecting dynamics using 1930 and 1960 as baseline years. The atlas also reflects the organizational advantages of a socialist state and demonstrates international characteristics, such as parallel legends in Russian and English. Despite certain shortcomings, including the absence of synthetic regionalization maps, the atlas represents a significant achievement in national cartography.
