In memoriam Ferjan Ormeling

Summary

This memorial article reviews the life and influence of Dutch cartographer Ferjan Ormeling, emphasizing his major contributions to cartographic education, atlas production, and toponymy. Inspired partly by his father’s work on the Bosatlas, Ormeling contributed to the atlas as a geography student and later completed doctoral research on place names in minority languages. Appointed professor in 1985, he developed cartography into a comprehensive academic curriculum that integrated traditional reproduction methods and emerging digital technologies with cognitive psychology, communication theory, and user research. Through leadership roles in Dutch and international cartographic organizations, including the ICA and the United Nations, he promoted clear and effective maps in education and journalism. His achievements were recognized with the 2017 Plancius Medal, while his defense of the Dutch spelling “kartografie” reflected his enduring linguistic and toponymic commitments.
