Geological maps in national atlases

Summary

The article examines the compilation of geological map groups in national atlases. It notes significant differences among published atlases in the number, content, legend principles, and representation methods of geological maps, which hinder international comparison. Based on an analysis of atlases from several countries (e.g., Belgium, Italy, France, the USSR), the author systematically reviews the current state and problems of key map types, including geological, tectonic, mineral resource, lithological-petrographic, and Quaternary deposit maps. The article emphasizes the need to unify legend principles, coordinate scales, and standardize representation methods to ensure map comparability and facilitate comprehensive territorial studies. Finally, it offers specific recommendations for improving the content and design of geological map groups, such as adopting a unified stratigraphic legend, strengthening the linkage between tectonic and mineral maps, and adding auxiliary maps based on national geological characteristics, aiming to provide a scientific basis for enhancing national atlases.
