Summary
Geographical Cartography: A Look into the Future is a collection dedicated to the eightieth birthday of K. A. Salishchev, edited by G. I. Rychagov, A. M. Berlyant, and V. S. Tikunov. The visible preface and contents identify four areas: geographical cartographic theory; the production and use of thematic maps; new methods involving automation, aerospace remote sensing, and regional geographic information systems; and educational cartography. The preface presents geographical cartography as a basis for integrating the geographical sciences and outlines anticipated methodological and technological developments over the following decade. The opening biography recounts Salishchev’s education and early expeditions, including the Indigirka expedition of 1926 and the Kolyma expedition of 1929–1930. Working with S. V. Obruchev, he participated in discovering and first mapping the Chersky Range, identified Oymyakon as the Northern Hemisphere’s pole of cold, and explored aerial visual surveying for small-scale mapping of remote regions. The closing material lists his publications and editorial work on cartographic theory, thematic mapping, natural-resource use, textbooks, and aerospace imagery. It also provides the collection’s contents, including an analytical review of worldwide cartographic periodicals. This summary is confined to the visible opening and closing material and does not reconstruct the arguments or conclusions of the omitted contributions.
