Der «Tübinger Atlas des Vorderen Orients (TAVO)»

Summary

The Tübingen Atlas of the Middle East encompasses the entire region from Turkey to Afghanistan and from the Persian Gulf to Egypt. It is divided into two main parts, Part A — Geography and Part B — History. It will contain a total of 379 maps on 285 folio sheets. A well-balanced relationship between the detailed and general maps is a basic feature of the Atlas. Since 1969 fourteen departments in five faculties of the universities of Tübingen, Mainz and Cologne have taken part in the preparation and production of maps within the Special Research Division 19. In addition to the maps, which each time might have a different scale, two monograph series, in which data and research results are presented, are being published as supplements to the Atlas. A close co-operation among author, coordinator, cartographic supervisor and cartographer makes it possible to do without a final cartographic draught. Technical procedure for map-production is adapted to the use of the "short scale". The production of the original is done by negative technique and register system. Colour originals are then made by "photocomposition" using the spectral colours magenta, cyan-blue and yellow with the addition of black. The Atlas maps are reproduced by four-colour offset.
