Summary

This is a collection of book reviews from Annales de Géographie (No. 569, 1993), evaluating three French-language geographical works. The first is a popular introduction to the history of cartography, organized in four chapters tracing the evolution from ancient mapping to scientific cartography. Despite some debatable subtitles, the text is rigorous and well-documented, featuring reproductions of rare documents and a biographical dictionary of major cartographers. The second reviews the 1988–1989 installments of the Atlas of Spatial Development of Austria, covering population, tourism, and transport themes based on the latest statistical data, continuously published under the auspices of the Austrian Conference on Spatial Planning.
