Compilation of typological maps based on national atlas materials (on the example of the National Atlas of Cuba)

Summary

This paper explores the use of comprehensive national atlases as a basis for subsequent thematic mapping, using the province of Matanzas, Cuba, as a case study. A systematic methodology is proposed, involving the selection of an appropriate base map and scale, the analysis of natural (geomorphological, hydrogeological, soil) and socio-economic (agriculture, sugar industry, transport) maps from the atlas, the creation of working overlays, and their synthesis to produce a final map of agricultural production types of land. The results demonstrate that this approach effectively integrates multi-source, multi-scale information to generate a comprehensive map with a detailed legend. This map not only reveals the spatial differentiation of agricultural production but also provides a scientific basis for rational land use and agricultural development planning. The study highlights the significant value of atlases as platforms for geographic information synthesis and further development.
