Summary

Timothy Trainor’s report of 11 September 1989 records the commission’s focus on atlas mapping techniques, particularly automation. The meeting reviewed national atlas reports and technical papers on databases, GIS, electronic atlases, computer-assisted production and atlas use. Edited proceedings were scheduled for distribution in January 1990. The commission planned to submit a draft final report at the 1991 International Cartographic Conference in Bournemouth, offering guidance on the transition from traditional atlases to those based on current information technology.
