Summary

This review examines the first five installments, comprising 25 maps, of Atlas der Donauländer, edited by Josef Breu and published by the Austrian Institute of East and Southeast European Studies in Vienna. Covering six countries and parts of neighboring states, the atlas uses a principal scale of 1:2,000,000 and provides explanatory texts in German, English, French, and Russian. The reviewer praises its cross-border cartography, highlighting geological, geomorphological, natural vegetation, population, settlement, and industrial maps, while noting information losses caused by heterogeneous data and administrative units. The reviewer finds that international comparisons nevertheless aid understanding of regional structures and encourages continued publication.
