Bibliography of International Geographical Congresses, 1871–1976

Summary

This bibliography, edited by George Kish, catalogues nearly seven thousand communications presented at the International Geographical Congresses from 1871 to 1976. Published by G.K. Hall & Co., it serves as Volume I in the Series of Studies of the History of Geography under the auspices of the Commission on the History of Geographical Thought of the International Geographical Union. The entries are organized chronologically by congress, from the First Congress in Antwerp, Belgium (1871) to the Twenty-third Congress in Moscow, Soviet Union (1976), covering the full evolution of geographical disciplines over a century. Each congress section lists titles and abstracts as they appeared in the original proceedings, along with authors' national affiliations. The volume includes a comprehensive subject index reflecting the discipline's changing interests and subdivisions, as well as an author index. In the preface, Kish explains that the project originated from discussions at the Commission's meeting during the Twenty-second Congress in Montreal (1972), aiming to make the work of several generations of geographers more accessible to contemporary scholars.
